City squares

City squares

Once city squares

were not the barren desert

of cobblestones

beaten down by the sun

they now are

They were plush with gurgling water

flowing in canals

and trees laden with fruits

and flowers and aromatic plants

where people could rest

and ponder and meditate

inhaling the sweetness of the air

that was somehow more nourishing

in scent and texture and temperature

than it now is

It was neither too hot

nor too cold

there weren’t flies nor mosquitoes

and the water soothed everything

and everyone with its melody
