Lifeless craters

Lifeless Craters

The mountains where I stand are cloudlike

and they rumble under my feet eager to spit ashes and fire

apart from that distant thunder like drum everything is quiet and still, almost unreal

For a little while I’ve left planet earth to another, alien place

I watch with fascination but also growing discomfort the landscape around me

as its strange light blinds me and dampen my heart

Yet why to fear the unknown, why not to trust the breeze that has carried me there

if it brought me to this place, it means I surely can gain something from this journey

I focus hard on all the information my senses register

I focus not only on the colors and the scents and the noises that reach through me

but also on the ones I would expect to find but aren’t there

And suddenly clarity imposes itself to my eyes

blue and green, the mother of life and nature itself, are missing from this picture

without you, I am a desert of rocks and sand and ashes

without you, the sun blazes through the sky with nothing to soften its light

without you, I am foreign and barren, and yet there’s some familiarity into that too

I miss the sound of flowing water

and the scent of falling rain

and the rustling of wind in trees canopies

and the soft and deep greens of vegetation and the shade they cast around

I miss the poetry and the mystery woven together

with the green and the blue I’ve been deprived from

And I’m waiting for the time you will fill again my craters with life
