Cloud Island

Cloud Island - Erik Zakhia watercolor

Have you seen the flickering flames dancing in the grass

are these fires or thunderbolts

Have you seen the clouds moving in the sky as though they were islands

and how cloudy-like the ocean is

Again I’ve painted the sea and the sky

two infinities that mirror one another

and meet on the horizon line

I’ve never been there

but I’ve always dreamed to

My gaze moving from beneath my feet to the distant confines of the world

where water and air mix and blend

which mysteries are hidden there and kept away from me

there where infinities meet

the sea and the sky lose their meaning when they are alone, stretching endlessly without a horizon to limit them

and that’s how I feel sometimes, a sunless sea left to its own darkness

But no, even if I want to, I can’t imagine a sea without a sky, without a horizon

even when I pretend to, I cannot exist without you

when I cup my heart in my hands, they stretch to the horizon and touch your hands

you are there, a foreign land to me yet so familiar

a land I keep on forgetting, but as soon as I lay eyes upon it, it rekindles times of yore

times when I knew what hid beyond the horizon

times when you were more familiar than I am to myself
