Tight words

masque de cire

My words

are open and airy

welcoming the breeze

between them

dancing in the wind

flying like butterflies

Your words are complex and rounded

protecting themselves from within

keeping the tides at large

you have been hurt deeply

and this wound still resonates

too loudly

to be light and free

I’ve never been an assiduous reader of poetry

despite being a regular writer

Often the words and structures used in poems

are far too complex for me to understand

Is it a lack of intelligence

a lack of patience as I thought it was

or is there a reason underneath?

Now I believe that our poetry mirrors

who we are from within

how tightly we control our emotions

The freer our emotions

the simpler our words, the more open our verses

The tighter our grip over our emotions

the more closed and obscure our sentences

that add up to form a castle

walls that are not to be crossed easily

The beholder shares her story

but withholds most of its substance, of its colors

it’s too painful to write crudely

too horrendous to relive one other time

Sharing this fortress, this rocky mountain, is a first step toward healing

but it is not enough

deep within the castle lie forgotten memories

deep within the mountain hides a beating heart

Time has come to trust the wind

let it enter your memories

and carry away all the ashes that are still weighing on you

Time has come to bare your heart

from the defenses you built

when you were still in danger

The war has passed and your kingdom is fast prospering

lay down the stones in your inner walls

and use them to build bridges

over the fast streaming rivers and the valleys

that still prevent you from reaching to others

from reaching to your own inner child

who’s been prisoner on a desert island

since you’ve departed from your original innocence
