arbres nuageux

The dark tower rises

burnt by a thunderstorm

or by men’s hands

It overlooks the city of houses

the green canals and the bridges

all built in red bricks

The air is fresh and brisk

it whispers of storms

and it yarns tales

of the nearby ocean

Bikes pass me closely

as I move from one piece of town

to the next, crossing an endless array

of bridges, leading me from the burnt tower

to the leaning tower

the old and the new church face each other

in a silent confrontation

The entire city has forgotten about

this strife that had bloodied the past

coloring the canals in red for days

but the towers do not forget

their stones are still the same

the ones who had witnessed it all

“Arbres nuageux” is a watercolor painting by Chantal Peguiron
