Waking up

Paintings by Chantal Peguiron

And as the haze starts dissipating

You start seeing the faces and the landscapes around you anew

It is a slow process

As an airplane taking off and crossing a thick curtain of clouds

For a brief instant sun brightly shines

And you believe that you’ve made it through

But the next instant you already plunge in

Another cloud that obstructs your view

The times of blindness were long and tiring and frustrating

The mist so thick it entered into your ears and nostrils and mouth

Taking away the flavor of food, the scent of flowers and the vibrating motion of musicality

Yet, they were not lost entirely

When external and internal blindness strike at you

When you can’t see the light anymore and appreciate it

You will naturally turn toward what is darker in you

You will try to understand what dwells in shadow

And strive to find beauty in that too

Slowly the painted sleeping women start opening an eye

Then the other eye

An unknown island that is still far emerges from the mist in the horizon

You shout land, land!

But you’re still too far and can’t precisely estimate distances

A renewed wind blows over the sails of your imagination

New shapes and colors are born on paper effortlessly

And you understand that it is only a shy beginning

And as the haze disappears entirely

And your feet touch solid land

At a timing that still is ignored

Rebirth will be completed
